Assignment:
"The Five Cs of Historical Thinking" (In the module)
The American Yawp, Chapter.
Other Tips: Be sure to have a clear argument that you defend with relevant evidence (sources) from this course. Organize each answer with a logical structure and use clear topic sentences and transitions to help your reader understand the logic of your organization. Break important ideas, etc. into separate paragraphs. Edit your answers thoroughly to avoid errors and to improve readability.
A) Discussion Responses for The American Yawp, Chapter: The New World
Source Requirement: Each answer should be supported by at least 1 (one) source from the course in the form of a short, direct quote, a paraphrased passage, or a summary of a key point. You are free to use any of the course materials to meet this requirement, including the lectures, The American Yawp, the primary sources in The American Yawp that can be found at the end of each chapter, and other materials, such articles, documentaries, and so on.
The secondary sources listed under recommended readings in The American Yawp will not count towards the source requirement. The primary sources will count as a source.
Quotes and paraphrased passages should be no longer than two to three sentences in length.
Please strive to use more than one source each week -- using only one source for all of your answers does not indicate excellent work.
Please cite your sources in parenthesis after the sentence in which you use the source. The author, title, and page number will do. If there is no page number, then obviously you cannot provide one. For The American Yawp, you can write the subsection and the title, the example of which follows this sentence. ("Indigenous America, The American Yawp).
A1) Describe life in the Americas on the eve of European colonization. (Tip: you should critically evaluate The American Yawp's portrayal of Native Americans).
A2) Discuss the global impact of the Columbian Exchange?
A3) What was Cahokia like? What might have happened to Cahokia? What does Cahokia tells us about the Americas prior to European contact, as well as the writing of history? (By Cahokia, I mean the city of the mound building people).
A4) explore examples of the historical concepts known as the Five Cs in any of this week's material (readings, lectures, etc.). Tip: You should read the article on the Five Cs first, and then look for examples of change, contingency, etc. in the readings. After finding such examples, you simply need to describe the examples and explain how each one exemplifies a particular C.
