Analysis

Synthesis of this source with another source. Compare and contrast the sources; why does this matter? How does this influence our understanding of this topic and the conversation revolving around it? How do these sources discuss this topic? Why? How do they work to influence our understanding of this topic?

1. Memo/Annotated Bibliography Discussing Your Four Sources for the Business Proposal

3-4 pages

Suggestion: complete this assignment before Sept. 3, the day before Labor Day

This Memo/Annotated Bibliography brings together your research for your Business Proposal in one document. Please find two (2) academic/scholarly articles and two non-scholarly but reputable/credible sources (such as newspaper articles, data and/or statistics from government organizations or nonprofit organizations). Please find two academic/scholarly journal articles from the Pfau library databases (EBSCOHost, JSTOR, Elsevier, Project Muse, Science Direct, other databases). You will find good non-scholarly sources on the ProQuest and EBSCOHost databases (along with a few others) and Google can be helpful, too (as long as you search with a discerning and critical eye).

Your annotated bibliography will list each source in alphabetical order in either APA format (similar to the References page) or MLA format (similar to the Works Cited page). After each citation entry, you will write a summary/overview of the source; a rhetorical analysis of the source; and then how this source applies to your planned proposal (these are your annotations about the source). You will then connect that source with another source you selected; how do these sources talk to each other; how do they agree or disagree; how do they approach your topic? Compare and contrast and discuss why the similarities and differences matter. Connecting sources like this is called synthesis; please synthesize the two sources. You will then do the same with the other sources. It should look like the following:

Smith's source
Jones's source
Peters's source
Johnson's source

One option: Connect Smith with Peters, and then Jones with Johnson, then Peters with Jones, and Johnson with Smith (it's not a perfect system, but it creates variety when synthesizing sources). Try to mix up your connections; please do not use one source as a base to compare to each other source.

You will organize your research and thoughts with this annotated bibliography, which should make writing your proposal easier.

2. Business Proposal with Research

4-5 Body pages

You will write a proposal for your company's CEO and Board of Directors (or group/people in charge of your organization) on how to address this issue. You are welcome to work with a topic we discussed in class (or one you selected for an earlier assignment) or you can select another topic related to business. Please use Times New Roman 12 point font. Please type single spaced paragraphs in block format (no indentation, and you separate paragraphs with a double space).

You will create a Cover Page, Table of Contents, an Abstract (write the Abstract last because it summarizes your proposal in 150-250 words), and then the Body of the proposal with a Works Cited (MLA) or References (APA) Page. Please use lowercase roman numeral numbers (ii, iii, iv) to number the Table Contents and the Abstract (centered at the bottom of each page; start with ii on the Table of Contents, but do not number your Title page). You will then switch to standard numbering (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) to page the Body of your proposal.

In the Body of the proposal, use different headers for different sections. For example:

• Introduction: Write the context of the situation here (1-2 paragraphs or more if desired)

• Problem: Discuss the general problem here (1-4 paragraphs or more as desired).

• Problem for Your Company: How does this problem

• affect your company? This could be a Second Level Heading (to be discussed in class).

• Conversation Related to this Problem (Research): Discuss your sources and how they discuss this problem or similar problems. Make connections among these sources to understand how they collectively address and construct this topic/problem and how it applies to your organization.

• Previous Approaches to Solving this Problem (Research): How have other companies/organizations dealt with similar problems? What were the results?

• Recommendations or Solutions: How will you move forward once the proposal is accepted? What steps must be taken to ensure a smooth transition from proposal to action? Provide a general overview of moving forward.

• Feasibility and Practicality: Discuss the feasibility and practicality of your proposal.

• Budget: What does the budget look like for this problem (please find realistic numbers)?

• Costs: How will this problem incur a cost for your company?

• Potential Profits: If you solve the problem, how will your company gain

• potential profit?

• Ethical Dilemmas or Dimensions: How might your proposal cause ethical problems? Or why is this proposal the right thing to do?

• Lawsuits: (optional; use if it relates to your problem) Why will your company face lawsuits if you do or do not take action? How is this a problem?

• Lost Opportunities: What might you lose if this problem continues? Why? How does it affect the company in the long run?

• Consequences of Not Acting (or Not Accepting this Proposal): If the proposal is not accepted and implemented, what might happen?

• Conclusion: Answer the "So What?" question by emphasizing how the driving purpose of this proposal will lead to beneficial results moving into the future. How will this benefit your audience (CEO, Board of Directors, other) and your organization? Why does this all matter as we move forward into the future (repetition is okay, but come to a conclusion based on your efforts).

The proposal requires you to use at least four outside sources. Use two scholarly journal articles from the Pfau library databases (EBSCOHost, JSTOR, Elsevier, Project Muse, Science Direct, other databases), and find two more non-scholarly sources (ProQuest, EBSCOHost, news articles, U.S. Census Data, etc.). Use these sources to support your proposal and ideas; do not let these sources overrun your thinking or writing.

Please use MLA or APA format to write in-text citations and cite your sources at the end.
