Introduction
In paper 2 you were introduced to ideas of feminism and gender. Transnational Feminism asks us to look at how women of color are oppressed in different ways. These differences are important to recognize because women of color and women in other parts of the world do not have access to the same privileges, as the developed western world. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah examines the the way gender and race intersect, how they complicate our discussion of equality, equity, and empowerment for women. In one sense the novel asks us to avoid oversimplifying the experiences of women, as a homogeneous group with "the same experience." The novel asks us to take a step back and acknowledge the privileges that certain groups of women have that are unavailable to other groups.
Task
Construct a thesis that answers these 2 questions: how does Adichie's novel get us to re-think the relationship between race and gender?
