Credibility (introduced) and ethics (introduced) are related, for example, in that speaking ethically is one way that we are rated on our credibility.

Locate an example of a public speech act, reported story, or public statement; NOT something that happened to you personally or from a movie or TV show. It needs to be something that you can research and provide a link to for others to see. It can be a clip from a speech, a newspaper story, a politician's statement, etc. that shows a lack of ethics because of the speaker's use of the following:

  • lacking sound evidence and reasoning (is the speech opinion-based, not fact-based)
  • obvious and overt insensitivity or intolerance to differences
  • dishonesty or plagiarism

Based on the eTextbook, there are 6 basic guidelines for ethical public speaking.

  • Have ethically sound goals, goals that are consistent with the welfare of society and your audience.
  • Be fully prepared for each speech.
  • Be honest in what you say.
  • Avoid name-calling and other forms of abusive language.
  • Do not plagiarize others' work.
  • Put ethical principles into practice at all times.

Remember that as an audience member, you also have ethical responsibilities.

Those are:

  • To listen courteously and attentively.
  • To avoid prejudging the speaker.
  • And, to support the free and open expression of ideas.
