Credibility (introduced) and ethics (introduced) are related, for example, in that speaking ethically is one way that we are rated on our credibility.

Locate an example of a public speech act, reported story, or public statement; NOT something that happened to you personally or from a movie or TV show. It needs to be something that you can research and provide a link to for others to see. It can be a clip from a speech, a newspaper story, a politician's statement, etc. that shows a lack of ethics because of the speaker's use of the following:

lacking sound evidence and reasoning (is the speech opinion-based, not fact-based)
obvious and overt insensitivity or intolerance to differences
dishonesty or plagiarism

Based on the eTextbook, there are 6 basic guidelines for ethical public speaking.

Have ethically sound goals, goals that are consistent with the welfare of society and your audience.
Be fully prepared for each speech.
Be honest in what you say.
Avoid name-calling and other forms of abusive language.
Do not plagiarize others' work.
Put ethical principles into practice at all times.

Remember that as an audience member, you also have ethical responsibilities.

Those are:

To listen courteously and attentively.
To avoid prejudging the speaker.
And, to support the free and open expression of ideas.
