Laud Humphrey 1970. Tearoom Trade: Impersonal Sex in Public Places. (Chicago: Aldine).
In his book, Tearoom Trade (1970), Humphrey studied homosexual behavior by observing casual same-sex acts by male strangers who met at public restrooms in a park, referred to as "tearooms" by participants. He pretended to be a homosexual and acted as the lookout, known as the "watch queen," whenever possible-a perfect opportunity to observed. To find out more about the participants, he secretly took down their license plate numbers when possible and used the police register to obtain their names and addresses. In disguise, he went to these men's homes under the pretense that he was conducting a health survey, to gather more information about them.
