Case: Nancy B., aged 24, had Guillame-Barre Syndrome. She was not terminally ill. She made an informed and voluntary decision that she did not want to live depending on life support. She was assessed two times and found to be capable to make this decision. The legal decision in the case was that her informed and freely made decision to end life-sustaining care was respected and she was not asking for help to die.
Commentators said the legal decision protected staff from prosecution. However, she had asked for help to die. She and her care team expected her to die when life-support care was removed.
