Question: Even though it was not that long ago in history, the Civil Right Act of 1964 set a lot of precedent for many of the HR practices that we use today. This act was signed into law by President Johnson. It was established in order to protect employees from being discriminated based on the basis of race, sex, religion, and natural origin (Labor in America, 2019). This act also prevents discrimination based on voting and housing.
From this act, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission(EEOC) was formed into order to reinforce the discrimination laws. The EEOC is the basis for many Human Resources departments today. This Act was one of the first steps in promoting a more diverse and fair work environment. Many organizations have HR departments that help prevent discrimination from happening and most organizations now encourage diversity. There are even HR groups that sole focus is to promote diversity driven programs.
