Summer Assignment
You will be shown a DVD to watch and analyze based on your learned knowledge of Ethics. You should use at least six concepts from the previous chapters to assist with explaining the corrupt behavior of the police officer or officers. Elements of the ethical system should be defined, explained and examined throughout your assessment and writing short essays to explain your perspectives.
The Outline:
1) Write and discuss the difficult ethical dilemma that one of the characters faced. What were the options that were available to him or them?
2) Discuss whether ethics and morals are relative or absolute based on the behavior of the righteous cop. Should cops have the rights to decide which behaviors are acceptable for them in real life?
3) Do you believe that the corrupt cops feel they have a moral right to take money from bad guys, and kickbacks based on the duties they performed daily?
4) What would you do if you knew that most of the officers in your department were corrupted?
5) Discuss some training techniques that could deter corruption in an organization, including police agencies. In the movie, was the chief blind to what was taken place or was he facing an ethical dilemma?
6) Did the good cop in the movie have a "duty" to tell about the corruption in the department? What would you have done? Why?
7) What is the code of silence? How important is it in a police organization?
8) Do you think that because police officers have so much discretion that could be a contributing factor to corruption?
