Purpose of this assignment

The assignment will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of design considerations and the design process. Learners will develop their ability to evaluate the planning and design phases and identify factors that affect the specification of materials and building services.

Scenario

Today with diminishing reserves of many materials, and the need to reduce energy consumption, there is need for new construction works to utilize material in the most effective and efficient manner. There should be provision that the material used can be recycled when the product has reached the end of its useful life. The designer should consider the environmental impact of all aspects of the design from the initial concept through realization and use, to reclamation.

This assignment has been designed for the student to assume the role of a typical Engineering Consultancy Firm from the perspective of the Design Engineer. Consider the design of a “green” thirty (30) classroom secondary school in the Carlsen Field area. Assemble a winning design proposal for the Ministry of Education outlining the relevant aspects of the intended design.

Task 1:

Prepare a chapter of the report for the Ministry of Education discussing the planning phase of the project. This first chapter shall discuss: legal restraints (land issues such a ownership, tenure, land use classification, etc.), planning constraints (Town & Country Planning Division guidelines such as footprint, setbacks, etc.), building regulations (reference to structural code, in this case small building design code to ensure structure and services are in accordance with health, safety and environmental standards), building control (Responsibility of City/Regional Corporation to enforce and approve building by providing Completion Certificate), disabled access (provision of ramps, adequate circulation and washrooms for disabled/elderly), current legislation (local and international laws and legal framework applicable to scenario).

Task 2:

Prepare a chapter of the report for the Ministry of Education discussing the design phase of the project. This second chapter of the report shall discuss: client brief (initial intention), intended use (purpose), change of use (ability for alternative uses), versatility (ability to withstand other uses), disabled access (requirements to satisfy), relevant legislation (local or international), project aesthetics (client to specify), influence of shape (client to specify style), size and proportion (form versus functionality), position (on lot), location (coastal influence), structural considerations of building (sloped consideration), effects of green, brown and reclaimed land on planning and design (foundation & safety considerations).

Task 3

Prepare a chapter of the report for the Ministry of Education evaluating how the planning and design phases are coordinated and managed. This chapter of the report shall discuss financial implications of design (material, labour and equipment), sources of funding (debt or cash), lifecycle cost planning (costs of commissioning, costs in use, lifecycle costing, cost modelling, facilities management). A simple schedule consisting of a bar or Gantt chart showing the personnel & timeframes to perform planning, design, coordination and management.

Task 4

Prepare a chapter of the report for the Ministry of Education examining the factors that affect specification of materials. This chapter shall discuss aesthetics (requirements for a school type environment, safe, durable, low maintenance) performance in use (strength, LCA), energy efficiencies e.g. production and processing of materials (LCC), environmental impact (GHG, carbon footprint, LCC).

Task 5

Prepare a chapter of the report for the Ministry of Education examining the factors that affect specification of building services. This chapter shall discuss requirements for temporary and permanent service installations (applications, inspection, approvals, fees), disposal of waste materials during construction process (construction debris, terms and conditions for contracts), disposal of waste materials during the life of the building, impact of legislation on design of service installations, sustainable urban drainage systems SUDS, renewable energy sources, integration of services into overall design.

Task 6

Prepare a chapter of the report for the Ministry of Education explaining the financial implications of specifying materials and building services. This chapter shall discuss financial implications of specifying different materials to perform the same function and different building services to provide the same function. Analysis should include lifecycle cost planning (costs of commissioning, costs in use, lifecycle costing, cost modelling, and facilities management).
