Ebony Robinson Tuesday Jun 20 at 8:06pm Manage Discussion Entry The two major epidemics of the middle ages were leprosy and the bubonic plague also known as Black Death. Other epidemics that effected this time included smallpox, diphtheria, measles, influenza, tuberculosis, anthrax, trachoma and syphilis (Cottrell, R. R., Girvan, J. T., McKenzie, J. F., & Seabert, D. ,2014).

Because the cause was unknown and was so severe, the plague was the most feared. Leprosy was considered to be the cruelest because it was very contagious.

During these Middle Ages cleanliness and hygiene was not a top priority. When cities were left to fend for themselves, people were living amongst animals, and there was an extreme lack of clean water and sewage removal. (Cottrell, R. R., Girvan, J. T., McKenzie, J. F., & Seabert, D. ,2014).

Some of the strategies used to prevent the disease were morally related. Some rebuked earthly pleasures and some began to rebuke God. There were also events of collective flagellation to take place. In my opinion, epidemics were more common in the Middle Ages than in the ancient civilizations because in the Middle Ages, they thought the epidemics had more to do with sin than proper health care.

During the time of the reawakening era of the ancient civilizations, there was more concern with cause and effect. Studies were being done and responsibility to regulate food, sewage removal, and overall care to one's health was presented allowing the number of deaths to fall. Cottrell, R. R., Girvan, J. T., McKenzie, J. F., & Seabert, D. ,2014).
