Learning Outcome 1: Manage database network (client/ server) connections using Database Net Services
Learning Outcome 2: Manage database instances and database storage.
Learning Outcome 3: Working with Distributed Databases
Assignment Tasks
1) The Database Administrator (DBA) of a Client-Server environment needs to establish a connection between its clients and the database server. Consider the following sales event that happens in a hypermarket. "Customer picks up the items and reaches the sales counter to purchase the same". Discuss the steps involved with respect to the sequence of actions as per the architecture of client server environment. Note that the discussion expects a customized diagram of the client server architecture (not the generic architecture) that is relevant to the sales event. Also note that generic explanation will carry no marks. Carry out some simulation experiments in the database lab and write an illustrative and reflective summary on the process involved. The discussion can have appropriate screen shots to illustrate the successful connectivity; and reflection on the process should be of not less than 1000 words.
2) Assume that you are employed as a database administrator (DBA) of a reputed hyper market in Sultanate of Oman overseeing all the operations of the hyper market database. Demonstrate the mechanism of database replication process that is supported by the typical DBMS hosting the hyper market database. Please note that database replication involve providing backup of the database. The demonstration should include creation of some physical and logical database structures, and select appropriate backup mechanism to back up the created logical tables.
3) a. Al-Fajr polyclinic has different branches spread across multiple locations (like Ruwi, Al- Seeb, Sohar) in the Sultanate of Oman. Each branch has its own database. For effective utilization of all resources the management has decided to link all those independent databases to a Headquarter database simulating the distributed database concept. With the help of appropriate block diagrams, explain how you would view this in a homogeneous environment.
b. With appropriate snippets of SQL code, discuss the concept of Database link which is used to enable the access to other databases. Write SQL command to link the above mentioned poly clinic database of a branch to the headquarters.
