For the first assignment in the Research Project, you will write and submit a topic proposal. Students must select a topic within the historical parameters of the course: United States history from the colonial period to the Civil War. Consider a person, event, or idea that you want to learn more about within the context of this class. Below are a list of topic ideas, but these are just suggestions-you are not limited to them.

Once you have selected a topic, you will write a short proposal for instructor approval. Your topic proposal should be typed in a word document with a minimum of 100 words. You should explain what topic you selected and why. Your proposal must include a working thesis statement with the understanding that it may be slightly modified later in the research process. You should also make sure that your topic is not too broad. For example, the Civil War is an acceptable topic, but just as a starting point. For your research, you should find a particular aspect of the topic you wish to explore further. For instance, if your topic is the Civil War, you can narrow down your topic to a particular feature of the Civil War, such as military strategy in the Civil War or the politics of slavery in the Civil War, etc.
