To answer these questions, you must read the book, by Stephanie Coontz.
this is an essay. You must have a thesis statement, an introduction, and a conclusion. You must make a minimum of four references/citations from the book to support you argument. Write a minimum of 3-5 pages, using 11 pt font and 1 inch margins all the way around.
All of these questions are based on the book, The Way We Never Were. There is no research required as all the answers are BASED on Coontz’s arguments in the book. You may use parenthetical documentation for your references to the book.
1. What is the overall thesis of the book? What is the role of nostalgia, according to the author? Is it positive or negative?
2. According to Coontz, what are the origins, functions, and contradictions of gender roles? Why does the author believe these roles developed?
3. Discuss the change in the evolution of the 21st century standard of good moral behavior. Do you agree with the author? Why do you think the definition of â€Å"good moral behavior†changed? Or, do you think it stayed stagnant? Why?
4. Discuss the changes that have occurred in marriage, sex, reproduction, intergenerational relationships, and life patterns between the 19th and 20th centuries. According to the author, what caused these changes? Was this change good or bad? Do you agree? Why/why not?
5. According to the author, what is â€Å"good parenting?†What is the myth of â€Å"parental omnipotence? What are the dangers associated with our focus on these 2 myths? Do you agree with her assessment?
6. Discuss the stereotypes associated with black family life in the US today. What role do you think slavery has played in the development of those myths?
7. What is the â€Å"crisis of the family?†Is this a real crisis? Is this just a crisis in white society? Do you think the government can/should pass laws to stop this crisis?
