Question: M. M. Hammer and S. K. Sarin. "Efficient Monitoring of Database Assertions." Proc. 1978 ACM SIGMOD International Conference on Management of Data, Austin, Texas (Mayfftme 1978). An algorithm is sketched for generating integrity-checking procedures (given appropriate integrity constraints) that are more efficient than the obvious "brute force" method of simply evaluating those constraints after an update has been performed. The checks are incorporated into transaction object code at compilation time. In some cases it is possible to detect that no run-time checks are needed at all. Even when they are needed, it is frequently possible to reduce the number of database accesses significantly in a variety of different ways.
