Case Study Task
Learning Outcome 1: Evaluate quantitative modelling concepts for problem solving and decision making in a logistics context.
Learning Outcome 2: Critique the logical process of modelling complex decision problems.
Learning Outcome 3: Derive solution(s) using a suitable software package when required.
Learning Outcome 4: Apply techniques and practice to model real world logistics problems.
Learning Outcome 5: Critically analyse and report results individually and/or in a group.
Assignment Tasks:
With reference to the job assignment task specified in Problem and shown in Case Study A on Page 4 below, you are required to submit a voice over PowerPoint presentation that addresses the following for Dennis Geyer's company.
1. Formulate the job assignment task as a linear programming problem. Ensure that you clearly define the problem's objective function and constraint equations. State the assumptions made.
2. Use Microsoft Excel Solver to solve the formulated linear programming problem.
3. Verify the solution obtained in Question 2 above showing that the solution matches the solution obtained from the Hungarian Algorithm.
4. Select ONE linear programming application of your choice from the literature. Analyze the selected application and critically discuss the benefits of using linear programming to solve the selected application.
Presentation
You must present your work as follows.
You are required to document your answer as a PowerPoint presentation with voice over; this requires that you add voice over your PowerPoint slides.
The following are some important considerations for the PowerPoint presentation.
a) Your PowerPoint presentation must be limited to a maximum of ten (10) minutes duration.
b) Ensure that your PowerPoint presentation is well-structured.
c) Take advantage of adding voiceover to your presentation, by ensuring that the key points are clearly discussed, and that the presentation captures the audience's attention.
d) You are expected to provide a significant range of secondary sources to underpin your work. These should be cited and referenced according to the Harvard Referencing System. For the PowerPoint presentation, present the list of references at the end of the presentation and ensure that the references are cited at relevant, appropriate, places during the presentation.
e) Number all the PowerPoint presentation slides.
Case Study - Dennis Geyer's company wishes to assign a set of jobs to a set of machines. The following table provides data as to the cost of each job when performed on a specific machine.
a) Determine the assignment of jobs to machines that will mini-mize Geyer's total cost.
b) What is the total cost of your assignments?
