Discussion Post: Subjectivity in Assessing Family Dynamics
A. Read Chapter 2, Understanding Learning about Intimate Behavior
B. Post in the Discussion Board on Blackboard to answer the following question:
Why is it difficult to be objective in some situations? Provide examples.
C. Answer the following questions:
I. Identify and analyze a basic assumption you have about family life. For example, many believe that parents should rear their own children. Discuss where they possibly got this idea, if this idea is always the best, and how to analyze alternatives. Begin to think of more challenging areas you have accepted by default rather than thought, such as religion, politics, college major-the list goes on.
II. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each of the eight theoretical perspectives. How is each perspective flawed on its own and how is true critical thinking employed in a variety of perspectives.
III. Discuss the benefits of research and the limits of findings. How can you determine the limitations in research, and that when these limitations are considered, how can we gain information and broaden our understanding of the topic.
