Case Study: Joy Barker a 72-year-old lady has been admitted to your ward with acute deterioration of daily functioning. She has a diagnosis of a rare small cell carcinoma, diagnosed five (5) months ago. Since then, she has been receiving cancer treatment which includes chemotherapy and radiotherapy. She is still in the active phase of treatment. Doctors had thought that they could get her into remission, but they have been unsuccessful. Her family have brought her in to see if there is a medical reason for her deterioration and confusion. Collateral history from her reveals that she is not eating, her fluid intake is poor, she has taken to lying in bed most days and is more unstable on her feet. She is on MS Contin for pain management.
