Seventy-five participants, who were either overweight or normal weight, were asked to envision meeting someone new. They chose how they would make a good first impression from options such as arriving on time, wearing clean clothes, smiling and looking relaxed. Some participants also answered questions relating to stereotypes about overweight people before answering the first impressions questions. Other participants answered the stereotype-related questions after the first impressions questions. In the end, overweight participants who had first answered questions about overweight people were more likely than other participants to rank "wearing clean clothes" as a top way to make a good first impression. Normal-weight participants and overweight participants who hadn't been primed to think of stereotypes were more likely to prioritize arriving on time.
