Assignment:
Sam is a 28 y/o G1P0000 at 18 weeks gestational age, dated by SNLMP. Their prenatal course has been uncomplicated so far. They are here for a regular prenatal visit.
As you are walking Sam to the exam room, you ask them if there's anything in particular they'd like to talk about at their visit today.
Sam says, "I've been feeling pretty lightheaded every time I stand up."
1. What information in Sam's history might be relevant to this symptom that Sam is reporting? What additional information would you want to know about the symptom of "lightheadedness?" What questions might you ask Sam related to their medical, family, and psychosocial history?
2. What objective information will you gather? What systems will you assess, and how will you assess them?
3. What would be some warning signs that would make you worried that something serious is going on? What serious conditions would you be worried about in a pregnant person that's feeling lightheaded?
4. How will you communicate this symptom and your findings to the provider? Write out what you would say/the handoff you would give.
5. Imagine your assessment and the provider's assessment suggest that Sam's symptom of lightheadedness is a normal discomfort of pregnancy, and not something concerning. Explain how the normal physiologic changes in pregnancy might cause Sam to have these symptoms.
6. Discuss steps Sam can take for self-care, to help decrease their physiologic lightheadedness.
7. What will you tell Sam about the warning signs, or serious signs or symptoms they should look out for, and that would mean they should call or come in right away?
