Question: Musk stated that his R&D budget is rising due to the Cybertruck and a lower-priced electric car for future sales. As he is ramping up to build them, there will be a significant amount of time (labor) working out the bugs before they are brought into production. He will need additional raw materials from the commodities market, and they are also getting more expensive. His balance sheet is going to take a hit for a few years until he sees sales of these two new vehicles.
Secondly, the electric car market is fading in the US. All manufacturers of electric vehicles are seeing a pullback from consumer demand, and Ford has even cut production of the Lighting truck back by one full shift. Due to the higher selling price of electric vehicles, and the decline in Federal and State tax credits/rebates, it is going to be difficult for consumers to purchase them. This will be a problem for Musk as well, and that is why he has continued to lower vehicle prices, while other manufacturers are raising them, for some unknown reason.
While the government may say inflation is getting better, between higher food, energy and housing prices, people do not have extra funds to buy new vehicles, let alone electric vehicles. Dealer lots are filled up with new and used vehicles, and they are not selling. This is a very telling visual of where all car sales are going through right now.
