Discussion: An Anatomy of Substance Dependence

We will begin this week's discussion on stimulants with a video featuring Dr. Howard Markel, a physician, and highly-acclaimed medical historian. Dr. Markel has written a book about the careers of two brilliant young men in the history of medicine-Dr. Sigmund Freud, and Dr. William Halsted.

The video presents some facts from the book that show how these two individuals made great contributions to the fields of psychology and surgery, respectively, although they were both, at one time, dependent on cocaine (Bowser, 2011; Markel, 2012).
