This learning resources have given us a great deal of information to learn from. Examining our past experiences and cross-referencing them to research completed can be quite enlightening, which is exactly what these learning resources do. Offering research and knowledge from previous experience, we were able to learn about the stress of COVID-19 from the less fortunate perspective of individuals with health ailments. From these resources the most fascinating piece of information to me was how negative social isolation was for some. It never occurred to me that individuals who experience life through an ailment rely on social support as a means of social treatment. With this in mind, when social gatherings are taken away a key form of treatment is also blocked off. This is not only interesting but educational as well because it describes the importance of social contact as a means of mental health treatment.
Social isolation was a key issue from the start of the pandemic. Whether you were in a support group, receiving treatment at an outpatient facility, or simply enjoyed self-prescribed social outings, such things were no longer able to be enjoyed. Social isolation proved to be difficult for all, even introducing new means of physical and psychological illnesses (Lund et al., 2020). But one group it hit the hardest were disabled individuals. These people already have a difficult time traversing the world due to their ailments, but add to the pot government mandated social isolation, and now those individuals have essentially nothing left in social facets.
That concept hit the disabled group hard, with research findings seeing a spike in loneliness and its common side effects with the implementation of social isolation (Lund et al., 2020). The stress of losing one's social life, no matter how developed it was, is enough to put them on the path of mental illness.
This brings about the introduction of stress related health issues, mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety disorders, and an overall decline in quality of life. Facing such difficult odds is a large and daunting undertaking, especially with the nuances of the pandemic. Introducing online meetings, video games, watch parties, and other means of online interaction is the fastest and simplest way to combat such difficult times. Whether it's on your phone, computer, game console, or even email, online interactions are, and were proven to be, the best way to combat such negative realities faced during the pandemic.
