ASSIGNMENT:

Compared to other western industrialize democracies our federal government is considered smaller and weaker in regards to domestic policy (when measured by size, authority, and independence).

1. Name one issue where you wish the federal government had more power and influence and explain why.

2. Then name one issue where you think the states should have more power and influence and explain why.

Here is an example I am taking from history. Alexander Hamilton might answer the first part of my question by stating that he wished the federal government had greater power over the economy. He wanted a national bank operated by the federal government to give the federal government more tools to raise and borrow money (investments) that could then be spent on important national priorities such as a national military and international trade. Thomas Jefferson might answer the second part of my question by suggesting that a national army was a bad idea and that national security is best protect by the states and state militias. He wished that states had more power when it comes to national security. He felt that a national army would be used (as it has by some nations) to oppress the populace.
