In other words, why did the slave trade even begin? What was the motivating factor? What does this suggest about the humanity, or lack thereof, of both those who individually participated in this atrocious extortion, and what does it suggest about our government protecting it and maintaining it for the first one hundred after its creation? 2. The definition of revolution is a complete eradication of an existing order from the bottom of society-up. Understanding this, discuss the American Revolution. Was it initiated by or ever meant to benefit the lower classes of society? Why or why not? Using specific language from the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, find the hypocrisy and contradictions inherent in the document, and discuss who was specifically left out of its protections.
3. Discuss the chapter "The Intimately Oppressed" found in A People's History of the United States. Discuss the social expectations of women in the colonial era. What were they never allowed to do, and what did society expect them to always do? Did women possess the freedom that the patriots so strongly advocated for? Explain. Lastly, how did race and class affect women's experiences in colonial society and post-Revolutionary society? Explain.
4. Discuss the week 3 posted article on the dangers of comparing white nationalism to the BLM movement. Be sure to provide specific detail from the article. Place this into historical context by also discussing the restrictions, oppression, and discrimination of Blacks from the onset of American history.
5. Discuss the film America Before Columbus. What was the environment in the Americas before the onslaught of Europeans. What prompted Europeans to come? What was their environment like, and why? In addition, discuss how the environment of the Americas changed after the onslaught of Europeans. What did Europeans bring with them that changed the landscape of the Americas? Explain.
