This chapter discusses reflexes and how important it is to ensure we understand them. Reflexes are part of the human condition; everyone has reflexes from an early age to when we are older. Some reflexes can be adjusted, while others are just pattern behaviors. Newborns come "prepackaged" with a host of reflexes that facilitate their survival. (Powell et al., 2016). Many of the simpler reflexes are activated through a reflex arc: a neural structure underlying some reflexes that consists of a sensory neuron, an interneuron, and a motor neuron.

For example, when you quickly jerk your hand away from an open flame, your flexion response is activated through a reflex arc. (Powell et al.,2016). There are many different types of reflexes; an example is flexion response and startle response. Then the chapter discusses fixed ratio patterns and how our emotions can drift and change. When something good happens to you suddenly, your emotions and body react one way. Then out of a sudden, your emotions diminish due to bad news.
