Question: Discuss the pros and cons of using each of the types of power discussed in the text. Which type of power is best to use in the family, and why? Consider which types of power are the most "expensive" for the source to acquire and use. For example, coercive power is usually considered to be one of the most costly forms of power because the user must constantly watch the target to be sure the target complies, and because the user must follow through on threats and punishments or lose credibility. In addition, users of coercive power sometimes find that the target retaliates and imposes costs on the user of coercive power. In contrast, referent power and legitimate power are less costly to use, primarily because they are "given" by the target to the source. How would these kinds of considerations affect family dynamics?
