Competence is a consistent, demonstrated level of performance that reflects a combination of function and proficiency and the application of knowledge to the clinical situation with proficiency.
Proficiency refers to a range of skills and abilities. Degrees of proficiency range from a minimal knowledge and skill sufficient to provide safe care specific to the situation to highly skilled care reflecting expertise in complex circumstances.
