Assignment;
You have just hired a new employee, Bill Russo, as a Physician Assistant in a busy Emergency Room. As you look through his medical form given to you by HR, you notice that Bill has recently been diagnosed with Huntington's disease, but he did not discuss this with you during his interview or with HR during the hiring process. As a member of the health administration team, what actions should you take, if any, and why? Be sure to consider privacy of medical records, danger to patients, assumptions/biases, etc. Utilize the Six-Step Process of Ethical Decision Making to help develop your response.
Step 1: Get the story straight, gather information, speak to others who may have encountered the same problem have encountered the same problem.
Step 2: Identify the type of ethical problem.
Step 3: Use ethics theories and principles to analyze the problem: Which approach do you want to use?
Step 4: Explore the practical alternatives; use your imagination because there may be several acceptable solutions, not just one. Avoid either/or thinking. Consult a colleague (while ensuring confidentiality) Come up with at least 3 possible alternatives.
Step 5: Based on the alternative you have chosen, complete the action. Remember that failing to act can result in worse harm than confronting the situation head on.
Step 6: Evaluate the process and outcome. Be reflective. Cite sources and use in text citations.
