Part 1: Kirra
Scenario
You work at Indigo Community Services and Health Hub (Indigo) as a Support Worker. Your supervisor asks you to provide support for Kirra, a 14 year old girl from a cultural group currently experiencing discrimination within your community.
Kirra lives at home with her grandmother Nell (67 years old), mother Merri (42 years old), and her 2 sisters, Jedda (4 years old) and Bindi (3 years old). Merri experiences depression and has been unemployed for 2 years. Merri drinks alcohol and spends most of the household money on this. On some days she is not able to get out of bed. Nell recently experienced a stroke and is unable to move around without assistance.
Kirra often looks after her 2 sisters and does not regularly attend school. She experiences anxiety and has low self-esteem. Some of the girls at school make fun of her because she never has any lunch, and her clothes are dirty. Kirra has poor literacy skills and has no close friends.
Merri and the children escaped a domestic violence situation a few years ago and Kirra has not seen her father since. No-one in the family has received any counselling or support. The family are at risk of being evicted from their home, as they are 2 months behind in rent.
a. Consider Kirra and her family's experiences of inequality.
