C.W. made an appointment to discuss pain management, while this is a problem we also need to consider his other health issues. Adjusting the medication for pain could also cause potential side effects. The phantom pain that CW is experiencing is a common occurrence and feels very real to the patient and if left untreated may cause real suffering for the patient both physically and mentally. Some sources even suggest trying a placebo effect. We need to consider the recent amputation and the Stage 3 pressure ulcer. The patient needs to be seen by a wound care nurse and ensure that proper care is being taken to promote healing and proper infection control. The patient needs to be re-educated on proper nutrition including the importance of a balanced diet. He also should understand the importance of fluid and sodium restriction. CW made an appointment for pain management and requested his pain medications be adjusted; however exploring alternative pain management may be a better option. We want the patient to get better, but overloading his body with pain medication isn't going to be the answer. We need to consider his fall risk, his other health issues, and how this drug could.
