Assignment Problem: A zoonotic disease is a disease of animals that people can get. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that "more than 6 out of every 10 infectious diseases in humans are spread from animals". Humans are born with innate immunity to diseases of other species but over time we have lived in such close contact with animals that the pathogens have been able to change and adapt and jump species. There is a distinction usually between zoonotic diseases and diseases of zoonotic origin. As an example H1N1 is a disease of zoonotic origins whereas Swine Flu is a zoonotic disease. What this means is that Swine Flu you get from a sick pig (one that has Swine Flu) and cannot as a human transmit it to another human. H1N1's origins were Swine Flu but the virus that causes it changed enough that it became H1N1, a disease that humans can give to humans. Not all diseases make the leap to become an infectious human disease with zoonotic origins that H1N1 did. Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) is a good example of this. It is still a zoonotic disease that you can only contract from infected birds. The CDC's website is a good place to start looking for the disease you want to tell us about. I think you will be surprised at how many of our common diseases are actually zoonotic or zoonotic in origin.

1) Pick a zoonotic disease or a disease with zoonotic origins that can or is affecting someone in the United States. Please tell us about the disease, origin, mode of transmission, symptoms etc. This is such a TIMELY TOPIC with all that is going on with corona virus and Covid-19. I'm sure you will be surprised though at the number of other zoonotic diseases that affect us. Use examples in your answer and cite your work. Be sure to answer in paragraph form. Your original post should be at least 100 words and your replies are expected to be at least 3 to 5 sentences.
