Assignment:
Privileged clients refer to individuals who hold advantages or benefits in society due to factors such as class, gender, race, age, or sexual orientation (Slattery, 2003). As a result of power dynamics and the possibility of differing worldviews and experiences, building a therapeutic relationship with privileged clients may be faced with several challenges.
As an individual who comes from the middle socioeconomic class and hold traditional values in sexual orientation, I may experience challenges when counselling clients who are from the high socioeconomic status (SES) and has a different sexual orientation from mine. Firstly, there can be difficulties in establishing trust and rapport, especially if I lack cultural competence or fails to acknowledge my own biases and discrimination. For instance, I may not be able to empathise the feeling of emptiness when the high SES client shares that he has nobody to turn to when he has an argument with his male partner. In my worldview, I may feel that high earners could easily find female partners and may fail to understand why the client chose to stay in the relationship.
Based on your challenges working with privileged clients, discuss one relevant multicultural-related ethical concern you might encounter. Recommend relevant steps you can take to manage this ethical concern.
