Edward's story!

You are a Community Case Manager and have been assigned to work with Edward. Edward is a 10-year-old boy who has been in foster care since he was 5 years old.

He is an indigenous child and has 7 siblings. His 3 older siblings live with their mum in the Community. The 3 younger siblings are in long term foster care. Edward's foster placement broke down and as a result he is going to live in a Residential Care Facility Called XYZ Residentials.

Edward has witnessed horrific domestic violence between his father and mother and suffered extreme physical and emotional abuse and neglect in his first 5 years of life which is why he was placed into foster care. Due to the trauma Edward experienced he has consistently had difficulty with behavioural issues and as a result has been suspended several times and expelled from 2 schools. He is unable to attend full days at school resulting in him having no friends.

His behaviour within the foster home became increasingly violent towards his siblings and he had high levels of property damage which contributed to the placement breaking down. Edward has been diagnosed with a mild Intellectual Impairment, Oppositional Defiance Disorder and ADHD. He does not respond to medications. He becomes easily overwhelmed in crowded environments and after his monthly visits with his family, he has extreme emotional outbursts.

Edward's connection to his culture is limited as he struggles with visiting his hometown, he does not have strong relationships with his other Auntie's and Uncle's. His father is in prison for a domestic violence related offense, Edward has significant fear of his father. His mother often misses the scheduled visits and has significant health concerns some which relate to drug use
