Discussion: Medication Costs

Currently, pharmaceutical companies can charge whatever they like for their patented drugs. If the government began regulating prices, what impact do you think that would have on the development of high-cost medications for rare (but severe) diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)? What about more common, but less deadly diseases, such as osteoarthritis, which might be seen as "less important" to treat?

Action Items

Watch the following two videos:

  • CEO defends raising drug price 5,000 percent
  • Why prescription drugs are ridiculously expensive

By the due date indicated and create a post addressing the following questions:

  1. Would government-regulated pricing of drugs increase or decrease research and development in drug treatments?
  2. Who would benefit the most if the government were to regulate pricing?
  3. Who would benefit the least if the government were to regulate pricing?
  4. What would be a fair pricing structure for new drugs so that companies could reasonably "make up" the millions they spent on creating them?
