Part A:

1. A manager resentfully finds himself forced to fire 500 employees to save the company (more than 100,000 employees) from an eminent bankruptcy. He tries to act with honesty by informing at the earliest possible the affected employees so they can find enough time to look for alternative jobs. He also decides to prepare a letter explaining the reasons of this unfortunate decision and with an apology approach. Additionally, he writes a recommendation letter to all these 500 employees to support their pursuit for jobs. Discuss this manager's behavior in terms of the five approaches (Fairness, Virtue, rights and utilitarian, Common good approach) and compare how each of these approaches contributed to the overall benefits of the organization.

Referring to the Multiple sclerosis case study in page 64 and 65 ( Case 2.9) of your textbook " Business values and ethics", Answer the following questions:

Should the NHS approval of a new drug be based merely on clinical effectiveness or rather should it consider its cost effectiveness while realizing that the new beta interferon drug costs 10,00 pounds per year per patient who suffers from multiple sclerosis?

Is cost effectiveness criterion for the approval of a new drug a result of the focus on consequentialism or virtue approach?

Was the NHS delay to give a final decision a sign of any unethical attitudes or rather an ethical decision while considering the Multiple sclerosis patients overall rights to benefit from an available medication that has proven its efficacy in managing the complications of this chronic illness?

Part C:
BDL Company is specialized in manufacturing shoes. The company's HR follows a recruitment strategy that excludes all new employees applications whose age is above 50 irrespective of their qualifications, experience or skills. While the company's primary assumption revolves around their belief that young employees are likely to be more productive, flexible and cooperative. Is this considered discrimination? Why?

The company claims that it is following this strategy for its own benefits while it reserves the right to choose what is best ultimately for its shareholders. Does this right grant the company any ethical stance knowing that some studies have been published in the literature predicating the existence of a relationship between age progression and decrease of workers capabilities such as speed Verhaegen and Salthouse (1997).
