In the book, The Art and Science of Leadership, the author talks about how leadership is about "getting things done for, through, and with others (Nahavandi, p.3). An example of a leader that impacted organizational changes would be the former Johnson & Johnson CEO, James E. Burke. Burke showed his decisive leadership skills when he was faced with a crisis situation, the Tylenol poisoning spree in 1982. It was when cyanide was found within the antibiotic and, due to this, about seven people were killed. This caused mistrust and great losses for the company. Burke withdrew Tylenol and publicly promoted that they were recalling all of the Tylenol bottles in the news. He showed integrity by pulling more than 32 million Tylenol bottles and announced that J&J would focus on a triple sealed tamper resistant packaging for their products ("5 CEOs who successfully weathered a crisis"). Burke understood that they needed to re-earn the customer's trust and assure to them that it was safe to use.
Leaders "provide their organization a sense of vision and mission" (Nahavandi, p. 11). Burke offered a public apology and pointed out that they violated the first line of the Johnson & Johnson credo, which is the company's mission statement ("Tylenol and the legacy of J&J's James Burke", 2012). Many people applauded his sacrifice, courage, and openness about the crisis. This served as a gold standard not only for crisis management but for business ethics as well. Burke showed empathy for the consumers and went the extra mile to admit there was a consumer health and safety issue. He was an inspirational leader as he "inspired others to act responsibility" (Czerniawski & Maloney, 2012). Burke was able to be proactive and transparent about the situation instead of hiding from it like many other companies do. A foundation of a good leader is one who puts others before themselves. Johnson & Johnson weren't reluctant to have a recall and were able to regain their customer's trust. They are still considered to be one of the best brands today.
