Biomed Instrumentation Assignment -
This assignment has 3 major objectives:
- To develop your skills in locating and correctly citing reference material from key journals in Biomedical Instrumentation.
- To provide an historical perspective of some aspect of Biomedical Instrumentation.
- To encourage reflection on the impact of engineering on society.
What you should do.
1. Choose a topic area (disease/disability/injury) that is of interest to you.
2. Locate at least 3 textbooks in which there are sections that describe the topic in terms of causes, physiological basis, diagnosis and treatment.
3. Read the relevant sections of these textbooks to obtain a broad understanding of the topic.
4. Based on this reading and your interests, select to further examine the instrumentation involved in either the diagnosis or treatment related to the topic. (only one of these is to be covered in the report)
5. Locate at least 1 Journal article more than 15 years old (before 2004) that discusses what were then considered "current techniques" in your selection from step 4.
6. Locate at least 1 Journal article less than 3 years old (from 2016) that discusses the present techniques.
7. Read these Journal articles (and others if necessary) and analyse them in relation to the following questions:
Physiological basis -
Have there been changes in the physiological basis of the diagnosis or the treatment and why?
What "engineering advances" have occurred which have contributed to the changes in instrumentation used?
How effective have these advances been in improving either diagnosis or treatment?
Is the new technology cheaper or more expensive?
Who have been the primary beneficiaries and what has been the impact on society?
TITLE: "Historical Perspectives of the latest medical devices for managing diabetes"
In this assignment you generally need to focus on latest biomedical device for treatment of diabetes, and compare it with previous devices. Want you to mention cell-in-a box, would be good if we can have some diagram or in tabular form showing what engineering advances have occurred in the matter of new biomedical devices for monitoring glucose level in patients comparing to old ones. You can compare cell-in -a box, continuous glucose monitors, insulin pens, insulin pumps, insulin injections and how the latest ones stand far better than the old technologies.
Section 1 Introduction: A brief description of the causes, physiological basis, diagnosis and treatment of the topic chosen. (approx 2 pages).
Section 2 Analysis and Discussion: Using the 4 headings provided above in step 7, answer the questions related to each heading using the information presented in the 2 Journal articles chosen and other sources as needed (approx 4 pages). Indicate what these 2 Journal articles are, and they should form the basis of your discussion. You should ensure that the articles that you choose relate to a significant amount of your discussion.
References: A list of references cited in the assignment. Correct referencing technique must be used throughout the report. All referencing (including in text referencing and the reference list) must use the Harvard System of referencing.
