Josephine is a store supervisor. She is responsible for overseeing shop level operation of a local retail chain which sells fashionable ladies garments and accessories. Her store is located in a busy commercial area and employs six sales staff. She starts her day by preparing a daily schedule of activities for herself and her sales staff, such as ordering supplies, paying management bills, changing items for window display, etc.
Half an hour before the store opens, Josephine meets with her sales staff to brief them about the new items in the coming season and divide any specific tasks among them. Today, she plans to discuss the drop in sales during the first quarter by 10 percent. She also wants to discuss her concern over returned merchandise. She believes that she should maintain close communication with her staff and act as a facilitator to encourage their participation in improving the store performance.
After the store opens, Josephine is frequently interrupted by her staff regarding enquiries from customers. During peak periods, she needs to help at the cashier counter or serve customers. She calls up advertising agencies for promotional issues and other chain stores to check the available stock of hot selling items regularly. Also, she prepares duty roster for her staff. On a monthly basis or when the need arises, Josephine meets with the sales manager to discuss issues relating to store operations such as strategies to boost sales or any problems encountered in her area.
List, define and describe with relevant examples in the case SIX Mintzberg's specific managerial roles performed by Josephine in managing her store.
