Irrational Beliefs
Irrational and often subconscious beliefs can cause emotional pain and distress. Below is a list of 24 common irrational beliefs (derived from the work of psychologist Albert Ellis).
1. To be happy I must have love and approval from my mate, my family, and my friends all the time.
2. I must be competent and perfect in all things that I do.
3. It is horrible when things are not the way I want them to be.
4. I can't be happy because of things that I can't change that happened to me in the past.
5. If others are critical of me, I must have done something wrong.
6. It is easier to avoid problems than to face life's difficulties and responsibilities.
7. I would be happy and successful if others didn't get in my way.
8. I am responsible for the happiness of others and they are responsible for my happiness.
9. I can't change what I think and what I feel.
10. People are fragile and should never be hurt.
11. If you don't please others they will abandon or reject you.
12. There is a perfect love and a perfect relationship.
13. It is bad or wrong to be selfish.
14. I should be able to control my child's/mate's behavior.
15. I must never show any weakness.
16. I can do things only when I am in the mood to do them.
17. I shouldn't have to feel any pain. I am entitled to a good life.
18. Self-discipline is too hard for me to achieve.
19. Everything has to be perfect in order for me to enjoy it.
20. Everybody should trust me.
21. I should be happy all the time.
22. There is an immediate and magical cure for all my problems.
23. I must be absolutely sure before I make a decision.
24. The world should be fair.
