Assignment:

Discussion: Inferencing - Cohort A

From ARC Sp23 ENGWR 300 LEC 11129 Arambel

The reading from 1.5 and 12.1, 12.2, and 12.3 of Writing and Critical Thinking Through Literature (Ringo and Kashyap 2020) you learned both about inferencing which is an important part of reading literature, and about the writing process for a literary analysis. In this discussion post, I want you to discuss both to help you reflect on the reading and prepare for drafting.

  1. Find a short passage in The Yellow House that has symbolism--water, the house, her name. Type out the passage and properly site using MLA.
  2. Make an inference from the passage.
  3. Explain how you came to make that inference. What facts did you base that inference on? Do you think there could be stereotypes or assumptions built into your inference?
  4. What will be your process for taking all that we have done so far--your annotations, your PIE assignment, your collaborative documents, this discussion, and the last--to begin your discovery draft? In other words, what is your writing process going to be? You have a lot of resources. How do you plan to use them to get ideas?
  5. What worries or concerns do you have about doing a literary analysis?

In your follow up posts to each other, answer the following questions comparing all the lists:

  • Do you agree with the inference? Would it be possible to make another inference? If so, what?
  • Discuss how your process is similar or different from your peers.
  • Address the worries your peer has. This can be with helpful advice or just by saying you have the same concern.
