1. At this point in our course we understand that literacy has diverse meanings with distinct implications for kinds of research, depending upon the author's point of view. Detail some of them and discuss some of the differences between them.

2. Different writers have commented upon the relationship between hegemony and the rise of dominant reading/writing practices. Consider the implications of the relationship between class, legitimation and reading practices. Do they reflect, construct, exacerbate the tensions within as well as between dominant and subordinate groups?

3. The literacy myth, sometimes known as the strong text or autonomous model of literacy is often challenged by anthropologists and linguists who use a "discourse practices" model. What are some the differences and significant assumptions and implications of the two approaches.

4. The value of schooled literacy is figured in the creation of symbolic capital within a wider political economy, how does this form of socialization articulate with the projects of the nation state?

5. The social formations of modernity are recognized as profoundly stratified; how have the readings in this course illuminated and/or obscured this intertwining of gender, ethnicity, class and race with power and culture?

6. Discuss the implications that different theoretical frameworks and analyses of literacy practices have for your understanding of narrative, socialization and identity formation.
