Assessment 1 - Essay
Module: Humanitarian Interventions and International relationship.
Essay - Choose one of the following statements to discuss and analyse. The essay should be a maximum of 2,000 words long.
1. There is no such thing as humanitarian intervention; states are not moral actors and only ever use force abroad in the pursuit of selfish ends.
2. Liberal democracies should uphold human rights internationally and, when necessary, take forcible action to prevent and/or halt intra-state atrocities within other states, regardless of the legality of this action.
3. Humanitarian intervention is an unacceptable threat to international peace and stability.
4. If we want to protect human rights globally we must accept the need to diminish the power of states and transfer power to trans-state international bodies.
5. The international community's willingness to act to protect human rights has increased since the end of the Cold War.
Assessment 2 - Policy Briefing
Module: Middle East Politics.
Unlike the final essay, which is an academic exercise, the policy briefing will give you an opportunity to think in a different, more policy-oriented way about current situations and problems in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. I would like you to imagine you have been asked to advise the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) or Department for International Development (DFID) about one of the following:
1. The flow of refugees out of Syria.
2. Lack of progress in negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.
3. The spread of violent Islamist propaganda in the Middle East.
4. Human rights in Saudi Arabia.
5. The continuing humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen.
6. Violence against women in Egypt.
Attend a special event with an invited speaker, about British policy-making in the Middle East (details to be announced).
