A few ways I have demonstrated competency 7 have been in the Reservist weekend visit and in my interactions with Veteran students on SAP Negative status.

For the Reservist weekend, the Dean of the Kenosha Campus invited me to attend her US Army Reservist weekend in Illinois. She allowed me to interview the soldiers to assess their needs as current or potential future students (at various universities). We had an open round table discussion which was very rewarding and eye-opening to me as a social worker. We discussed how their experience in the Army prepared them to be successful students. They seemed to appreciate this strength-based conversation.

Another example is in my everyday duties at Herzing as the SAP Advisor. SAP stands for Satisfactory Academic Progress. When a student falls below satisfactory academic progress I begin working with them in their warning semester to assess their needs and match available services from Herzing or outside agencies. If a student does not succeed in making Satisfactory Academic Progress at the end of their warning semester, they can be dismissed. However, there is an appeal to that dismissal decision. In their appeal, a student will describe what mitigating circumstance blocked them from making satisfactory progress. They will describe how their situation has changed or how they are better able to handle their situation. Then they will describe their study plan and their technology plan. This appeal application, therefore, becomes a sort of intake form. We assess what the student describes as their needs and determine if we can meet those needs to allow them to continue in their studies. It was in one such form that I learned of a student's health needs and I was able to get them the services they required.
