Problem: Social Work Inequality and Poverty Essay
• Step I: Choose one of the at-risk populations discussed on pages 82-84 of your text (Faces of Poverty).
• Step II: Go beyond the information provided in the text to develop a profile of how this population experiences poverty. Include the following:
1. Societal factors and influences that create the inequality and poverty that exists within/for the population.
2. Identify the main social welfare (safety net) program(s) that serve(s) your population. Discuss how the program aids the population and discuss any current threats to these programs such as policy or societal value shifts/challenges (an example of this would be the push in some states to assign work requirements to Medicaid programs).
3. Do you think that these programs really address the need and inequality or would the population be better served by a redistribution of resources and value structure change as suggested on pg 84 of your text?
4. How does housing stability play into the experience of poverty for your population?
5. Come up with at least two ideas or ways that a social worker might advocate for change that would impact poverty or inequality for this population.
6. Locate and share at least one example of your population and their experience with poverty. This can be a news story, profile of a client on an agency website, a video, etc. Post a link to your example and share your reactions to the example.
