Case: Lana is social worker at the Department of Aging for a small rural community. Lana discovers that there are a number of open spaces at the senior center during the day. This surprises her due to the fact that the community is largely made up of older people. She talks to the administrator, who tells her that while they have the volunteers and the space to provide programming for more seniors, many in the area do not have transportation, especially during the day when family members are busy working. Lana discovers after talking with her mother, a nurse at the local health clinic that primarily serves seniors, that many of them miss appointments due to a lack of transportation and not having someone to attend appointments with them. Lana knows from her course work in geriatrics that social isolation and inconsistent access to health care can lead to serious mental and physical health issues for older people.
Lana decides to visit the senior transportation center in the area and finds out that its budget has been cut. Consequently, while it does have vehicles, the transportation center does not have as many drivers as it used to have to help with transportation needs. Lana thinks about this and remembers hearing that some of the high school seniors are having trouble accruing enough community service hours to graduate. Many of the students have issues with transportation due to not having cars or access to public transportation. Since the area is rural, students are not able to walk to many places where they may be able to complete their community service hours. Lana sees a common theme related to people missing opportunities due to a lack of transportation. Lana realizes that the high school is located in town just a few blocks away from the transportation center, which is indeed within walking distance for students. Lana decides that the Department of Aging, the school system, and the transportation center could start working together. The students could volunteer at the Department of Transportation to drive the seniors. This way the seniors' needs are met for transportation to programming at the center and doctor appointments and the students are able to accrue their community service hours for graduation.
Question: Discuss how the principle of working together applies to Lana's plan for community building.
