Problem: Adaptation to a New Ecosystem
In this activity, you will identify an invasive species in your local ecosystem. You will conduct research online or make field observations, if needed. If you are doing field observations, then gather information using a digital camera or digital video camera. You will collect all the relevant information and create a presentation using any presentation software. You will submit the presentation for grading.
You will need these materials (for field work):
a) digital camera/video camera
b) notepad
c) pen/pencil
Stay safe during field work. An invasive species can be harmful. Research to find a species that does not pose any danger to you.
Part 1: Identify an invasive species in your local ecosystem. Discuss how the species adapted to its native environment, including the types of adaptations and adaptive techniques.
Part 2: Discuss how the environmental pressures are different in the local environment compared with its native environment.
Part 3: Discuss the threats posed by this species to the local environment and the measures used to control the species.
Part 4: Speculate on how climate change could present an advantage or a disadvantage for the invasive species.
