Essay Topic
The Belgian theologian Edward Schillebeeckx argues that "suffering and evil are not a problem, but an unfathomable, theoretically incomprehensible mystery."1 Schillebeeckx does not dismiss the enduring bitterness of suffering in human history. Rather he asserts that the only adequate response to the presence of evil and suffering in the world is not a theory about it, but practical resistance to evil, and the creative, positive transformation of the suffering it causes. Towards this project, Schillebeeckx takes as his template the ‘Christ event,' that is, the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, the anointed of God.
Discuss what this narrative can offer as a meaningful way forward through the reality of human suffering. More particularly, discuss how the ‘Christ event' might function as a template for an approach to how people might confront evil and suffering in their lives and the lives of others?
