Assessment: Essay Question
A recent Forbes article outlines the top issues facing human resource leaders in 2022. Selecting ONE issue (or two related issues) identified in this article: outline the key challenges and opportunities these issues present to organisations and workers. Then, discuss how HR planning AND work design can help New Zealand organisations respond to these challenges and opportunities and why this is important.
Recommended Essay Structure:
• Introduction (approx. 150-200 words)
• Discussion (approx. 1600-1700 words)
>> Outline the issue/s selected and identify the challenges and opportunities this presents to organisations and workers (approx. 500 words)
>> Discuss how HR planning and work design can be used to respond to these challenges and opportunities and why this is important (approx. 800-1200 words)
• Conclusion (approx. 150 words)
• Reference List (not included in the word count)
Remember that essays are a cohesive piece of writing and do NOT have headings. The structure suggested above is to help you develop a clear, cogent structure for your discussion. Ensure you remove all headings (except for the reference list) in the final stages of drafting your essay.
Please ensure you read the marking rubric which outlines how marks will be awarded, and to ensure you have addressed all the key elements for each section.
Resources / Source Materials
You must use at least SIX (6) quality source materials for this essay. For a more comprehensive and convincing discussion aim to use 8-12 quality sources.
Essential Resources
You MUST use the following resources in developing and supporting your discussion. These are counted as two of 6+ references required for the essay.
• Nankervis et al (2020) (set text)
• Forbes (2021) - Top 10 issues facing HR leaders heading into 2022
You can also look ahead to Topics 5-9 of the course to identify any potentially relevant resources for issues such as attraction of talent (Topic 6), retention including reward, training, and development (Topics 6 and 8), and healthy work environments (Topic 9).
Assessment 2 - Essential Information
This assessment draws on your understanding of ideas covered predominately in topics 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the course.
The assessment requires you to develop and demonstrate your understanding of concepts (principles and practices) related to HR Planning and Work Design, and an ability to apply these to issues related to the changing nature of work and the workforce as per the essay question.
It also assesses your ability to develop and demonstrate clear, critical and appropriate writing and presentation skills.
"Discuss" means to investigate and present different aspects of a problem or subject, usually in support of a position or argument.
the same time creates challenges for both individuals and the organisation (e.g. motivation/distractions; the ability to monitor and manage performance; health and safety; and the maintenance of employment relationships).
The relevance of HR planning and/or work design in terms of addressing the challenges and/or the opportunities identified will be differentially important depending on what issue/s you choose. It is expected that both could be relevant and if so should be addressed; however one (e.g. HR planning) may be more relevant than the other (e.g. work design) and would therefore be the primary (although not exclusive) focus of the discussion.
An essay is a cohesive and fluid piece of writing that discusses a question, issue or topic. An essay should have: an introduction (usually 10% of the word limit, or 1 full paragraph), a body (comprising a number of smaller ideas, each in distinct paragraphs, linked to each other, and to the essay Q), and a conclusion (max 10% of the word limit).
An essay should NOT have:
• headings (please remove these near the end of the drafting process)
• bullet points, tables, lists, diagrams, images etc.
• use of personal pronouns (they detract from an informed and objective discussion - your 'voice' will come through in how you discuss the ideas and your overall writing style)
An essay should provide an informed discussion of the question/issue/topic posed. It should be written in your own words, but should acknowledge where specific ideas have come (called a citation).
Please use APA style.
