Problem: Ding Lings Exploration of Female Experiences and Consciousness Essay

Choose ONE of the following two topics for your paper. Concentrate on producing good close readings and analysis of primary sources, as we have practiced throughout the term. The essay should have a coherent structure and main argument supported by specific textual analysis. You might want to begin your paper with a short introductory paragraph that concisely presents your main thesis. In the main body of your paper, elaborate on this thesis and provide evidence to support it before coming to a concluding paragraph summarizing and reinforcing your thesis.

Also avoid general information and statements that are not related to your thesis. The more tightly defined and discussed the topic, the better. Question I. From "Miss Sophie's Diary" of the 1920s to "When I was in the Xia Village" of the 1940s, Ding Ling went through dramatic changes in literary and political terms. She continued to reflect on modern female consciousness, from the 1920s urban centers such as Beijing and Shanghai to the 1940s Communist rural regions. Discuss how Ding Ling explores female experiences and consciousness in these two stories.

Question II. Wu Zhuoliu's novel Orphan of Asia deals with the split Taiwan subjectivities as stranded among mainland Chinese motherland, Japanese the colonizer, and the local island of Taiwan. Consider the portrayal of schizophrenic identities in terms of language (dialects), culture, gender, and/or ethnicity as manifested.
