Nursing Informatics- Informatics Role in Healthcare
Purpose: Students will expand and demonstrate their knowledge of the role of informatics and how standardized terminology and language, electronic health record, information technology, meaningful use, and healthcare information exchange support informatics in healthcare.
Instructions: After reviewing the lectures and assigned readings for this week, students will discuss informatics including roles of standardized terminology and language, information technology, electronic health records, meaningful use, and healthcare information exchange to support informatics. Students will incorporate and apply these concepts by sharing how used within healthcare and to improve healthcare quality. Examples are expected to reflect application.
This paper should include:
Introductory Paragraph:provide an overview (summary) of what will be addressed; state the purpose of paper
Explain and discuss the following terms and their use in healthcare: this section should include a definition and explanation of the following terms: (i) Informatics, (ii) Electronic Health Record, (iii) Information Technology, (iv) Standardized Terminology and Language, (v) Meaningful Use, and (vi) Healthcare Information Exchanges. As part of this explanation and discussion, provide examples reflecting application of these terms or concepts to nursing or healthcare practice.
Analyze how the concepts listed are integrated to manage and share data, and support informatics; Include in this application the role of interoperability:
(i) standardized terminology and language, (ii) electronic health records, (iii) meaningful use, and (iv) health information exchange. Provide examples to illustrate your discussion.
Application to healthcare environment:
I. Discuss how data (either within EHR or from other sources) are used for MU and HIE and how can impact patient outcomes; provide examples.
II. Discuss how informatics, electronic health records, meaningful use and/or health information exchange is used in your own work environment - this should include stating the specific EHR your organization uses, how MU is reported in your organizations, etc. Provide examples.
